Song of the Day

Have you ever day dreamed about running away? Forgetting all the expectations, requirements, and every obligated adherence life demands? I have. In fact, I would say I consider it every day. To some this might sound alarming. But I think it would be alarming if there were individuals who didn't dream about leaving it all. I've always been a fan of surfy-jammers and on Girls Names' 2011 release "Dead to Me" delivers album wide. However, according to the lead singer Cathal Cully , " Dead to Me literally was dead to us by the time it was committed to wax ". Which is quite a bummer to hear. I'm not exactly sure why he and his bandmates feel this way toward such a solid album but only they can know why. Regardless, it's still a great album packed with reverb-laden, sunny jams. "Bury Me" was my introduction to the band and remains my favorite song by the group. The song starts off with a funny little lead guitar intro that misdirects expectations. The intro sounds almost like a joke; as if what you are going to hear for the rest of the song is a shitty punk, garage band...but that's where the band explodes in unison and blasts you with a warm, loud, rock jam. I heard about his song from a “ Whats In My Bag ” episode featuring Kurt Vile. If you haven’t heard of it you should check it out. They pick musicians and follow them as they pick out a bunch of records. Kurt Vile picked one up by Bert Jansch and mentioned something about “that song Poison” being on there. So of course I had to check it out. It’s Kurt Vile man! And of course he was right... it is a killer tune.

Remember Ty Segall ? He’s truly a “jack-of-all-trades”. I remember finding out about Fuzz and listening to them for awhile before I made the connection...”The lead singer sounds just like Ty Segall” I remember thinking to myself. Come to find out after a bit of research, it is Ty singing! But that wasn’t the the biggest surprise...he’s actually playing drums too! Holy smokes! In pretty much all of his other projects: Ty Segall, Ty Segall Band, and his associations with other weirdo, psyche rock bands like Sic Apls, The Perverts, and White Fence, Segall has always shredded the guitar. So I was pretty flabbergasted when I found out he was drumming and singing in Fuzz. I’ve played the drums since I was probably 12 years old, and let me tell you, singing while playing drums is very difficult. Space rock. What comes to mind? Trippy synthesizer bloops and bleeps layered over drum machines and programmed hi-hats? Maybe some ambient wind sounds? But it's "space ROCK" so there's got to be some guitars and bass in there too right? Hawkwind might as well have been the founders of "space rock". Starting from the collaboration of artists with a mutual interest in "electronic music", the band had formed and had help from other notable musicians such as Ginger Baker, who founded the little band called Cream, and even Ian Kilmister, or as most people know him by, Lemmy, the founder of Motorhead, who played bass in Hawkwind for sometime. Their music ranges from psychedelic to even instances of folk. But there was always a sci-fi nod and "space" theme. I apologize for lack of posting here lately. I told myself from the start that I wouldn't let "life" get in the way. But lo-and-behold..."life" happened...and I failed to post anything for a couple of day. But I will get back on track and get songs posted everyday. Here's a tune by the band Guess Who called "Undun". Randolph Charles Bachman  t he founding member and lead guitarist of the Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive apparently wrote this tune after witnessing a girl trip acid at a party and then go into a coma. I was trying to form my own understanding on this song before I read about it and wasn't really getting anywhere. But a girl tripping acid makes sense given the lyrics. " She found a mountain that was far too high,  and when she found out she couldn't fly, It was too late" Despite it's rather morbid subject matter, the song is a fun tune and almost kind of jazzy. Sometimes we need to just sit back and relax. Life, and the multiple hurdles it holds can become pretty draining at times. We all have different situations and different circumstances. But regardless of how much money, time, or resources we have...we all run into something. And that’s why it’s important for us all to take time and just...rest. Explosions in the Sky can help you do just that. While there are no words or vocals, the musical landscapes they create don’t need words. Their music takes you on a journey. This song right here, by far my favorite EITS song, which concludes my favorite album by them “Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever" is a song that takes you through a lot. It's a long song and it your emotions will fluctuate as each chapter unfolds. But they know they take you through a lot and at the end...they give you rest. As much as I hate the word "epic"... this song is truly epic.
