Girls "Darling"

Chills, man. It's all about those chills. You know what I'm talking about?

No?

Those chills. Those moments when you are so engulfed by the composition you are listening to that your emotions get the better of you. Those chills set in and you can't help but feel overwhelmed. You can't exactly explain why. Maybe it's the grandiose sound, the layers of instruments, or maybe it's the lyrics. Or perhaps it's just where you happen to be; driving home during a killer sunset or driving through the mountains on a road trip. Whatever it is it just hits you and you feel taken by the music.

This is what makes music. This is my favorite thing about music.

Throughout this blog I will reference these "chills". There are tons of songs and moments that make me fill this way. Sometimes they don't. It all depends on how I am feeling or where I'm at.

Today I was driving home throwing on some old tunes that I remember listening to around this time of the year. I recalled this band simply called "Girls". I was playing the album, called "Album", and tracking through my favorite songs off of it. I was of course anticipating the last song, my favorite song, "Darling".

The song starts off with these big ole' drums followed by this groovy guitar riff. Instantly...chills. I smiled and turned it up, just letting those chills enhance. "I was feeling so sad and alone, then I found a friend in the song that I'm singing", Christopher Owens begins singing. This man's history alone warrants a whole article. His life has been one of heartache, drugs, abandonment, and sorrow. But Chris has his music. "It's coming straight from my heart" he admits, wearing his emotions on his sleeve. Paired with the absolute joyful sound of the song it's hard to not feel emotional. The song and lyrics are a direct testament to just how powerful music is. Here is a man who has endured so much heartache but is feeling at peace...by singing a song. A simple song about how music can free us.

I'm not even listening to the song right now...and still... chills.

What are some songs that make you feel this way? I'm interested! Let me know!
